Beginner’s Fly Fishing School
Taylor Streit and Taos Fly Shop June 3-5, 2012
If you want to really learn to fly fish this is the ticket. On our regular guide trip the primary goal is catching fish--but some aspects of fly fishing need undivided attention-- away from the distraction of actually fishing. Although you’ll study gear, knots and flies this is primarily an outdoor school and “how to fly fish” classes are held on the water. (With casting lessons on grass.) Taylor will give demonstrations from his book Instinctive Fly Fishing and then he and his guides will guide you onto your first trout on the fly.
Sunday June 5, 9 am, Class introduction, meet instructors, pass out copies of Instinctive Fly Fishing (book included in class). Gear explanation with Nick Streit.

Instinctive Fly Fishing School
Taylor Streit and Taos Fly Shop May 29-30 2012
This school is for intermediate to advanced fly fishers and based on Taylor’s book Instinctive Fly Fishing . It will be held “on the water” and about half the weekend will be devoted to guided fishing. (3 students to a guide)
Most teachings about fly fishing emphasize technical aspects, but little attention is given to the real issue--learning how to actually fish. Mr. Streit writes that “Overburdened with theories, formulas and flies the fly fisher splashes ungracefully into the stream dragging all that stuff along with him. Never realizing that knowledge and gear don’t, in themselves, make a fisherman. But defining “how to fish” is elusive…and are intuitive, predatory, skills too slippery to be easily caught…. many of the things that make a great fisherman are things that he does unconsciously. Ask him why he ducked there or choose to fish a pool from that particular spot—and he wouldn’t know.”
These things are hard to explain, and vary from pool to pool, and really needs to be shown. Taylor will do this with demos on both rivers and lakes. (Including how to read water, making an approach, using the sun and shade, and proper positioning. Casts for different situations will be taught, including the all-important short cast, throwing a Hopper/Dropper rig, and casting into the wind. Mending and getting a good drift will be covered. Plus how, when, and where to fish various hatches. And perhaps most important of all –that moment of truth—setting the hook.
The spring weekend should be well timed for good fishing and the school will help you catch more fish all summer.
Meets at 8:30 am June 5th at Taos Fly Shop and runs to 5:30 PM June 6th--with lunch included.
$395 pp plus tax covers both days. (Deposit of half required.)

Guides School
Taylor Streit and Taos Fly Shop May 18-20, 2012
Due to a need for fly fishing guides throughout the Rocky Mountains, Taylor Streit and Taos Fly Shop started a guide’s school in 2008. Taylor is a logical choice to conduct this school as he was elected as a “legendary guide” in 2001 into the Freshwater Fishing Hall Of Fame and has guided for over thirty years. His three books are Instinctive Fly Fishing , Fly Fishing New Mexico and Man vs Fish—The Fly Fisherman’s Eternal Struggle.
Instinctive Fly Fishing will be our text book. It was written from a guides perspective and is unlike any other fly fishing book because it gets down to the real reasons why people do—or don’t—catch fish.
The school will run 3 ½ days (4 PM 5th—4PM on 8th) and include:
- Casting lessons/teaching casting--with Nick and Taylor Streit
- Evaluating conditions/where to fish and when
- The fly fishing personalities—guiding kids, woman, beginners and experts
- Taking charge and keeping clients in good water
- Landing and releasing fish
- And last but not least—crafting the “fishing excuse”
- CPR & FIRST AID COURSE AVAILABLE
- GUIDES CHARM SCHOOL: Making lunch, clock reading, gassing up (the car that is—not the guide). Getting big tips!
The real emphasis of this class will be on the water; and from Taylor’s wealth of experience you will learn to deal with the incredible number of variations that occur in nature—in both human nature and Mother Nature.
If you are not a great fly fisher—as of yet—don’t be intimidated as much of fly fishing guiding is about teaching beginners, and does not necessarily require advanced skills. If you have a willingness to learn, are responsible and can make sensible decisions that is a big part of the job.
The total cost is $595 (plus tax) that includes a copy of Instinctive Fly Fishing and 3 lunches. If you just want to take this course and have no plans of guiding you are welcome and you will acquire a much deeper understanding of the sport. (But please keep in mind, although students will get to fish, this school is not about attendees fishing.)

From his book Instinctive Fly Fishing, Hall of Fame Guide Taylor Streit teaches casting and fishing techniques to anglers from beginners to guide level. Although many aspects of fly fishing are covered, these are primarily outdoor schools with guided fishing on stream and lake. We take the mystery out of what may appear to be a complicated sport—while catching fish. (Note: our popular Guide’s school is not about catching fish.)
